BEN-HUR G. VILLANUEVA's OBRA (c/o TFC)

Sculptor, painter, educator and lecturer, Ben-Hur Villanueva regularly expresses his artistic flair and creative passion at art exhibitions in Manila, New York, Paris, Tokyo, Singapore, Helsinki, and Havana, Cuba.

However, in his humble workshop at the Arko Ni Apo (Ilocano term for Ark of the Lord) Art Gallery in Baguio city, he is much more than a visual artist. There, he reveals his personal compositions (brass, metal, wood and oil) along with special stories behind each masterpiece. Longer encounters at his gallery offer profound lessons on his art, life, family and his relationships with other people.

His 30-year teaching experience at the Ateneo De Manila University inspired him to live up to the institutions vision of Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam which means For the greater Glory of God and A Man for Others. He personally believes that what the Lord has given us; we should give back to Him. Our capacity to do well in any chosen endeavor is significantly appreciated and achieved only if we share it with others.

And this is the reason why Ben-Hur travels the country giving seminars and spearheading art-related activities with professionals, educators, students, young artists, television/film writers and directors, street children, priests and sisters from various congregations and the like.

Every individual has his/her artistic inclinations and propensity be it visual, music, dance, literary, or fashion and so he/she has the right to enhance and utilize it creatively, says this Artist for Others . Sharing it with others is what makes our life more meaningful and blessed.

Ben-Hur Villanueva is currently in Cebu, hosted by Sun.Star Publishing Inc. and he will have informal sessions with art students and faculty at the U.P. College of Fine Arts.

Ben-Hur has also served as a president for the Society of Philippine Sculptors (SPS); Art director for the Ephpheta Foundation for the Blind, Inc. and vice president-treasurer for Unescos International Art Association (IAA).

The life and art of Ben-Hur Villanueva

For acclaimed Filipino sculptor Ben-Hur Villanueva, a true artist is one who willingly shares the craft to others and stays positive despite the limited resources. In this video, he humbly recounts his beginnings and relates his struggles as both an artist and educator.

3 O'CLOCK PRAYER

Christ told St. Faustina, as she recorded in her famous Diary, “at three o’clock, implore My mercy, especially for sinners; and, if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My Passion..(Diary 1320)…immerse yourself completely in My mercy (Diary 1572)..”.

"You died, Jesus, but the source of life flowed out for soul and the ocean of Mercy opened up for the whole world. Oh fountain of Life immesurable Divine Mercy, cover the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.

"O Blood and Water which flowed out from the heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!

"Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One Have Mercy on us an the whole world." Amen (3 x)

Jesus King of Mercy I trust in you!

BERNARD LEHNER, Servant of God

Bernard Lehner was a German lad who died at age 14 years in Germany at the height of World War II. Born in Herrngiersdorf, the son of a carpenter, he was described as a studious, religious boy who attended seminary school in Regensburg when he was thirteen years old. Soon thereafter, he contracted diptheria and taken to the children’s clinic. After ten weeks of intense suffering, he realized he was going to die and requested the Sacrament of the Sick. He died on January 24, 1944.

Early in 1948, Archbishop Michele Buchberger of Regensburg opened the process for the child’s beatification. In 1951 the documents were submitted to the Congregation of the Saints at the Holy See.

Shortly after his death, a Jesuit priest, Fr. Giuseppe Kunz, of the seminary in which Bernhard studied, wrote a short biography published in 1947.

The memory and story of Bernard Lehner spread throughout Europe. In 1952, his remains were transferred from the church cemetery to the church in the city in which he died.
Yes, even the young among us can be recognized as saints. Perhaps we need to remember this as we interact with the youth of our day.

Visita Iglesia Online

A Lenten Presentation of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)

MANILA, April 1, 2011—The media office of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines launched on Friday an online site that caters to overseas Filipino workers and physically impaired to join the celebration of Holy Week and Easter.

Dubbed Visita Iglesia Online, the Lenten site which can be accessed at http://visitaiglesia.net offers a virtual experience of celebrating Lent, the Holy Week and Easter at the comfort of one’s room—in front of a multimedia laptop or desktop which somehow becomes a virtual chapel.

But CBCP Media Director Msgr. Pedro Quitorio, said the site should not be used as a substitute to the liturgical celebrations done in parishes.

He said those who have the capability to celebrate liturgical services in their parish churches should do so.

“The liturgy is a community act and being so it is most meaningfully celebrated in the context of the community or the parish,” he stressed.

The website features various resources for spiritual growth and deepening one’s faith.

It also includes catechesis and reflections for Lent, Holy Week and Easter preached by bishops and priests.

The “online church-goer” (OCG) will have the traditional Visita Iglesia in a multimedia presentation that features 14 shrines and pilgrimage churches to correspond with the 14 Stations of the Cross with reflections given by priests.

It has also the traditional Seven Last Words and the Pasyon.

The site likewise highlights the architectural marvel of centuries-old baroque churches in the country. (CBCPNews)

Virtual pilgrimage opened at St. Francis of Assisi's tomb

.- Officials at the shrine of St. Francis of Assisi have installed two video cameras in the crypt of the basilica so Catholics worldwide can make a “virtual pilgrimage” to the saint's tomb.

The installation of the cameras, which can be accessed at www.sanfrancesco.org, coincides with the re-opening of the crypt of St. Francis, which closed on Feb. 25 for renovation and maintenance.
The crypt has been the resting place of the saint’s remains since 1230.

Devotees of St. Francis, the founder of the Franciscans, can also send their prayer requests to latuapreghiera@sanfrancesco.org.

The president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, presided at the re-opening of the crypt on April 9.

The general custodian of the Convent of Assisi, Fr. Guiseppe Piemontese, told L’Osservatore Romano, “The preparation and expectations for Pope Benedict XVI’s visit next Oct. 27” were motivators for restoring “the original splendor of this place, which is the center and heart of Assisi and of Franciscans all over the world.”

Thanks to the work of Sergio Fusetti, the walls of the crypt  – which were blackened from candle smoke – were restored to their original red color. A new lighting system was also installed.

The last restoration of the crypt took place in 1818 at the quest of Pope Pius VII. Workers carefully excavated the area around the tomb so that it could be visible to pilgrims for the first time in centuries.

Plenary Indulgence for Divine Mercy Sunday

Divine Mercy Sunday

Plenary Indulgence for Divine Mercy Sunday

In a decree dated August 3, 2002, the Apostolic Penitentiary announced that in order "to ensure that the faithful would observe this day (Divine Mercy Sunday) with intense devotion, the Supreme Pontiff himself established that this Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence…so that the faithful might receive in great abundance the gift of the consolation of the Holy Spirit.  In this way, they can foster a growing love for God and for their neighbor, and after they have obtained God's pardon, they in turn might be persuaded to show a prompt pardon to their brothers and sisters."

The plenary indulgence is granted (under the usual conditions of a sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and a prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on Divine Mercy Sunday, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, recite the Our Father and the Creed, and also adding a devout prayer (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!).

Additional provisions are offered for those who are impeded from fulfilling these requirements, but who wish to acquire a plenary indulgence.  The full text of the decree of the Apostolic Penitentiary may be found at: www.mercysunday.com.  While the readings and prayers for Mass on this day remain unchanged (they reflect perfectly on Our Lord's Divine Mercy) the Holy See offers this reflection:

The Gospel of the Second Sunday of Easter narrates the wonderful things Christ the Lord accomplished on the day of the Resurrection during His first public appearance: "On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you.'  When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side.  Then the disciples were glad to see the Lord.  Jesus said to them again, 'Peace be with you.  As the Father has sent Me, so even I send you,' and then He breathed on them, and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.  If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained'" (Jn 20, 19-23).

In addition, the decree requires that parish priests "should inform the faithful in the most suitable way of the Church's salutary provision.  They should promptly and generously be willing to hear their confessions.  On Divine Mercy Sunday, after celebrating Mass they should lead the prayers that have been given above and they should also encourage the faithful to perform acts of mercy as often as they can."
